October 2018 saw new car launches and the limelight goes to the Hyundai Santro, Ford Aspire, and the Tata JTP twins. New car launches have helped carmakers register good growth numbers, but some have suffered. We take a look at car sales for the month of October 2018.
Maruti Suzuki has had a flat growth of 0.2 percent compared to the same time last year. The carmaker managed to sell a total of 1,46,766 units in October 2018, out of which 1,38,100 units were sold in the domestic market and 8,666 units were exported.
Models such as the Alto, Dzire, Wagon R and the Swift continued to do good in terms of sales, while the new Ciaz has not been popular. Maruti Suzuki sold 3,892 units of the facelift Ciaz in October 2018 compared to 4,107 units sold during the same time last year.
Toyota also recorded a marginal increase in growth, but better than Maruti Suzuki. The Japanese carmaker registered 2 percent growth in domestic sales, having sold 13,245 units in October 2018, while 12,606 units were sold in the domestic market and 639 units were exported.
Toyota exported 1,597 units during October 2017, which is a dip in numbers compared to this month. Toyota’s sales were affected by fuel prices, increase in interest rates, and hike in insurance premium. Toyota, however, is satisfied with sales.
Ford is one of the few carmakers on this list who has registered good growth figures — 30 percent to be exact. Ford sold a total of 21,346 units in October 2018, compared to 15,033 units sold in the same period last year. Ford managed to sell 9,044 units in the domestic market and exported 12,302 units, which is again an increase compared to the previous term.
Speaking about Ford’s sales, Anurag Mehrotra, the President and Managing Director of Ford India said, "The industry continues to face headwinds of low consumer sentiment, high fuel price and interest rate in the near term. At Ford, we continue to deliver on our four strategic pillars of Strong Brand, Right Product, Competitive Cost and Effective Scale, that has enabled us to grow faster than the industry."
Hyundai India registered its highest ever sales numbers, having sold a total of 65,020 units in total during October 2018. Hyundai sold 52,001 units domestically and exported 13,019 units. Hyundai registered a growth of 4 percent for domestic sales.
During the same time last year, Hyundai exported 12,551 units. Also, the biggest launch of the year for the carmaker, the Santro garnered good sales numbers which helped the company grow.
