German automaker Volkswagen plans to launch a slew of new models in the Indian market in the coming years. Now, a report from Autocar India states that Volkswagen is considering the Golf GTI hot hatchback for the Indian market. If at all launched in India the Volkswagen Golf GTI will be offered in limited numbers, similar to the Polo GTI.
The report states that the Volkswagen Golf GTI will come to India via CBU (Completely Built Unit) route. As per the new rules, an automaker is allowed to import 2,500 units per year as a CBU or CKD unit and it need not be homologated again in India. If launched in India, the Volkswagen Golf GTI could carry a price tag of around ₹40lakh.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI is one of the most successful hot hatchbacks in the global markets. Currently, Volkswagen is working on the new eighth-gen Golf and it will be lighter, more powerful and will get the tech gizmos. The Golf GTI is likely to draw power from a revised 2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that churns out 255bhp and 350Nm of torque on the standard model and 290bhp and 370Nm of torque on the TCR model.
Apart from the Golf GTI, Volkswagen will also launch the T-ROC and the seven-seater version of the Tiguan SUV in the Indian market. Expect the Volkswagen Golf GTI to be launched in the country in the second half of 2020.
